1 arrested after ‘heavy police presence’ at Summit Mall, officials say
FAIRLAWN, Ohio (WOIO) - Fairlawn police confirmed a 21-year-old man was arrested after a ‘heavy police presence’ at the Summit Mall on Saturday afternoon.
The Summit Mall was locked down because of a dispute between two men, and one of them pulled out a gun inside the mall, located at 3265 W Market St. That man then took off running.
The dispute broke out at 4:38 p.m. Officers cleared the threat by 5:50 p.m.
The mall was locked down for an hour, according to Sgt. Shawn Adams of the Fairlawn Police Department. The mall was cleared within 15 minutes, but police had to go store-to-store to make sure all customers stuck inside at the time of the lockdown made it outside of the building.
Sgt. Adams confirmed to 19 News there were no shots fired and no injuries during the incident.
One woman said, stopped before she entered the mall, said was outraged and said nowhere is safe from gun violence.
“I just got angry,” the woman said. “I’m sick of this. When does it end? We have got to do something, these are kids with guns.”
Fairlawn police arrested the 21-year-old in the parking lot of Chase Bank, located at 3265 W. Market St., and recovered his gun under a car. Officials said the suspect threw it while fleeing the area.
Many customers who arrived at the Summit Mall after the arrest were confused because the mall doors were open but the stores were closed. Police told 19 News many of the employees were ‘shaken up,’ and were sent home early.
Officials have not released the name of the suspect.
