CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) - The Cleveland Metropolitan School District announced on Tuesday that philanthropist MacKenzie Scott is gifting $20 million “to broaden students’ horizons, strengthen support for staff and principals, and make improvements.”

Scott’s gift is the largest private donation to CMSD in the last 20 years and “might be its largest private donation ever.”

CMSD said the donation will be invested into three categories:

  • Scholar opportunities - “Student travel for college visits and learning”
  • Educator opportunities - “Tuition and training”
  • One-time improvements - For example, athletic equipment, musical instruments and science labs

Scott, the ex-wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, donated nearly $2 billion to 343 organizations who assist underserved communities across the country.

The Board of Education will vote to approve whether the donation should be accepted during Tuesday’s meeting.
