CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) - The Shrine Church of Saint Stanislaus, the mother church of Cleveland Polonia, extended condolences to the people of Poland and prayed for the victims of the tragic plane accident which President Lech Kaczynski, his wife, and several chief government officials lost their lives.

During Sunday's Polish Mass there were special memorial prayers for the victims, the Polish nation, and Polish people everywhere.

Kaczynski, his wife, members of the polish military and civilian leaders were on their way to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Katyn Massacre, honoring Polish officers who were murdered in World War II.

Eugene Bak from the Polish American Cultural Center tells 19 Action News "this has never happened - anything close to that magnitude in the thousand year history of Poland."

Poland has a democratic form of government - the Parliament Speaker is now acting president - a new president will be elected within sixty days.

Saint Stanislaus is located at 3649 E. 65th Street, three blocks north of Fleet Avenue
