What a story Laura Cowan has to tell.  She's now a volunteer counselor at the Domestic Violence and Child Advocacy Center on the west side, but years ago while living in Los Angeles, Laura's husband died, with three kids, Laura turned to a man she thought wanted to help them.

"He locked us in a garage for six months, he raped me, he raped my daughter, he abused the kids," Laura said.

That man is serving seven life sentences.  It truly is a miracle Laura Cowan survived her ordeal and it's inspiring how she did not let it ruin her life.  It's become her life mission to help others break free of domestic violence.

"A lot of domestic violence is hidden, nobody wants to talk about it, they are either ashamed or embarrassed. You have to talk to someone and get help," she said.

It's her work with those women, and the children it affects that has her nominated as an Everyday Hero finalist.  Everyday Heroes is a program sponsored by Verizon Wireless, the Urban League of Greater Cleveland and the group, One Hundred Black Men of Greater Cleveland.  It's purpose is to honor those making a difference in Cleveland.
