Of the 11 subcompacts or minicars included in a recent crash test, only one did reasonably well, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
The test involves a vehicle hitting a barrier at 40 mph with just a portion of its front bumper.
It concentrates the force on an area of the car outside the crash safety features built on most cars.
The agency rated the Chevy Spark as "acceptable" and none of the cars as good.
Six car models basically failed - receiving the institute's lowest rating: "poor."
Those cars were the Nissan Versa, the Toyota Prius C, the Hyundai Accent, the Mitsubishi Mirage, the Fiat 500 and the Honda Fit.
The institute considered the performance of the Kia Rio, the Mazda Two, the Toyota Yaris and the Ford Fiesta "marginal."

An 18-year-old is being held in connection with the murder of his elderly grandmother in Russell Township. Ruth Phillips, 81, was found fatally stabbed in her Cloveridge Road home on Tuesday. Her grandson was taken into custody a short time later. He is set to be arraigned on Wednesday afternoon.
