ROCKY RIVER, OH (WOIO) - We're getting slammed with yet another winter storm.

The winter weather can take a hit on your system.

"As you drop the body temperature down, it's going to be less functional," says Doctor Justin Smith of Rocky River's Urgent Care.

The doctor says even though we're Clevelanders and we all are used to the winter weather there are still health risks that come along with it, such as hypothermia and falls.

Doctor Smith tells 19 Action News he's seen an increase in people getting hurt.

Because of the ice at least 24 people were injured in this past week alone.

"Which is a high number of people who have injured themselves badly. Some fractured bones things like that certainly sprains and strains and all that kind of stuff," says Smith.

Smith also advises you don't let your guard down when it comes to washing your hands.

Lathering up cuts down on spreading germs.

Make sure to run your hands under warm soapy water for at least 20 seconds.

For good measure you can also open the windows for a few minutes to let fresh air in, so germs don't stay trapped inside.

"Often times we cough and sneeze and cover it up with our hands. The bacterial virus is perfectly capable of existing on that," warns Smith.
