Mercury spill in Garfield Heights

Mercury spill in Garfield Heights

GARFIELD HEIGHTS, OH (WOIO) - EPA agents were called out to a mercury spill in the driveway of a home on York Boulevard.

Garfield Heights Police Officers were called to the home at 13617 York Boulevard Friday afternoon, after a resident saw something 'sparkly' and realized what it was.

The home is vacant and police are investigating where the mercury came from.

EPA agents have contacted a private contractor to clean up the spill with a special mercury vacuum. The total amount of spilled mercury is around several ounces.

There are no evacuations, but the house has been blocked off.

If the mercury vacuum does not completely get rid of the chemical, a portion of the driveway may have to be torn up.
