Pizza delivery driver killed during robbery at Lorain motel
LORAIN, OH (WOIO) - Robert Caudill was delivering food for a local pizza chain to the Lake Motel at 3917 West Erie Avenue when he became the victim of a robbery Monday night, according to police.
The manager of Happy's Pizza says drivers rarely carry more than $20, just enough cash to make change for customers. It was a murder over a few dollars.
"It is very shocking. It is so sad. Our hearts go out to the family, prayers, thoughts. It's the holiday season. Very sad," said manager Danielle Bowe.
Police say after Benjamin Davis, 29, shot Caudill to death around 11:30 p.m., then stole his car before getting caught in Amherst.
Davis faces aggravated murder and aggravated robbery charges. Davis is believed to have acted alone but the case is still under investigation.
It was a long, somber day inside the restaurant where Caudill had worked for several months. The restaurant is collecting money from customers for his family.
"Robert was a really good guy. He had two little boys and everything he did was for those two boys and his family," said Bowe.
Other delivery drivers, some understandably nervous, continued to work a day after their coworker was killed. Everyone there is wondering the same thing.
"Everybody keeps thinking: Why? I don't know if we'll ever get that answer. I don't think any answer will ever be good enough to take a life for no reason," said Bowe.
Bowe says another driver had delivered a pizza to the same man at the same motel Monday afternoon, hours before the murder. Nothing happened during that delivery.
If you'd like to help Caudill's family, donations can be made to
in his name.
This is the first homicide in the city of Lorain in 2014.
