NORTHFIELD, OH (WOIO) - FirstEnergy shows off its aerial construction of new transmission line in Northfield. Friday's construction involved workers connecting overhead wires to 170-foot tall transmission towers from a helicopter.
Throughout the process, the utility helicopter hovered close to the towers, dropping off and picking up workers and equipment.
The Glenwillow-Bruce Mansfield 345-kilovolt transmission line is a 114-mile, $133 million transmission project that will enhance electric service in the Cleveland area. The project is needed in light of recent retirements of older, coal-fired power plants along Lake Erie. Aerial construction is more efficient and helps minimize the project's environmental impact.
