1 dead, 1 injured in early morning shooting

Cleveland police are investigating a shooting that happened early Tuesday morning.

Around 2:30 a.m. at East 162nd Street and Miles Avenue, police say one man was killed and another was seriously injured.

Police say 20-year-old Vernon Black, of Maple Heights, and three other people were hanging around the driveway of a home near the intersection. The victims were approached by five men wearing hooded sweatshirts in a silver sedan. The men fired shots at the victims from inside and outside the vehicle.

Black later died at MetroHealth Medical Center. The second victim, also 20 years old, was shot in his back, but was treated and released at MetroHealth.

The homicide unit and Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office responded to the hospital and to the scene for investigation. Anyone with more information about the shooting is urged to contact the homicide unit at 216-623-5464.
