CONCORD TOWNSHIP, OH (WOIO) - Authorities have a man in custody after a shooting on a Lake Metroparks walking path.
The victim, a 40-year-old woman was taken to TriPoint Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries after being shot around 2:45 p.m. at the Greenway Corridor.
Authorities say the 40-year-old woman told them she was walking with two young children when she heard five gunshots and was struck in the arm.
"There were five shots that she heard and she hollered out 'don't shoot I have children'," explains Chief Daniel Llewellyn, Lake Metroparks Chief Ranger.
The two children were not hurt.
That incident sparked a larger investigation, sending officers to a home in the 6000 block of Ravenna Road in Concord Township, just a few hundred yards from that walking path.
That's where they say the body of a woman was found inside a home.
"We're all just really shocked and shaken up," said neighbor Kathleen Fleischer.
Family members of the victim gathered across the street while detectives searched for clues.
Another neighbor who did not want to be identified, says he knew the victim and described her as an animal lover who was always friendly. He teaches just up the road.
"I was calling my students, telling them not to come to class, when I heard all the gunfire," he said.
The Lake County Sheriff confirms the homicide is connected to the shooting on the nearby walking path.
Deputy spotted the shooter with the help of a plane searching above.
"One of our SWAT teams engaged a Latino male, approximately 30-years-old in a woodline area. He leveled a weapon at the SWAT team members and they did get him to surrender," says Lake County Sheriff Dan Dunlap.
Officers with guns drawn didn't take any chances telling people to stay indoors.
They blocked off parts of Liberty Street and Ravenna Road and shut down the Greenway Trail until the shooter was found.
"Very big sigh of relief that they finally caught somebody," says Fleischer.
