SHAKER HEIGHTS, OH (WOIO) - The man arrested in the deadly hit and run of a Shaker Heights school teacher has been indicted by a Grand Jury.
Derick Allan Ward, 45, of Cleveland was indicted on charges of aggravated vehicular homicide, failure to comply and failure to stop after an accident in connection with the hit and run death of James Caffrey.
Ward was taken into custody by Shaker Heights Police Department last week.
His bond was set at $1.5 million.
Caffrey was a 51-year-old fifth grade teacher at Woodbury School in Shaker Heights who was jogging down South Park Boulevard at about 5:30 p.m., on Saturday, Jan. 24, 2015, when a vehicle driven by Ward struck him from behind causing his death.
Police say Ward struck and killed Caffrey as he was fleeing police. He was originally pulled over in University Heights for invalid tags. He stopped for a brief moment, then took off. He was speeding and fleeing police when he struck Caffrey. He left the vehicle at the scene and took off on foot.
