Patti LaBelle's Sweet Potato Pie shortage prompted by viral video
CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) - Cleveland area Walmart stores are having a tough time keeping up with the demand for Patti LaBelle Sweet Potato Pies, thanks to one viral video.
California native James Wright Chanel says after eating a piece of Patti LaBelle's Sweet Potato Pie, he's now Patti himself!
Patti's Pies are only sold at Walmart stores.
One store manager said they sold out over weekend, selling 170 pies on Saturday and another 69 on Sunday. The warehouse is out, but they expect to get more this weekend.
The case is the same in Brook Park.
"It was insane, we just couldn't keep them on the shelves. As soon as we would put them out, someone would be picking them up," said Vikki Lange, Assistant Bakery Manager.
Since last weekend the company has sold one pie per second for 72 hours straight. It is the most visited food item on Walmart's website.
"I have customers calling me and asking me when I'm expecting my next bakery delivery, what time, can they call at 2 a.m. to see if we've gotten any pies in so it's kind of an around the clock phenomenon for us," Lange said.
Chanel's YouTube video of him eating the pie has gone viral (warning: contains explicit language):
The video has gotten so much attention that the Grammy Award-winning singer called Chanel to thank him for his rave review.
Walmart's supplier says it needs at least two million pounds of California sweet potatoes to keep up with the demand and they are out!
They say it could be a while before they can meet the demand.
"I don't know if we're gonna get them in for Thanksgiving but we've got plenty of other pies, pumpkin and cherry and apple and pecan. I know everybody wants Patti Pies but we're out right now," Lange said.
Walmart released a video reassuring shoppers they are doing what they can to get Patti's pies back on store shelves soon.
And as one customer said, "I'm on my own!"
