37-year-old creates own plan to lose half his body weight
Ashtabula man loses half his body weight

ASHTABULA, OH (WOIO) - So many of us struggle with trying to lose weight. Often it's just that stubborn 5 to 10 pounds.

But imagine having such a problem that you have to lose more than half your body weight!  That was the case for a 37-year-old man in Ashtabula.

"I couldn't do things I wanted to do, I just couldn't even just go to the store and walk around and shop," Rodney Rappe said.

One day he explains, "It was like a switch flipped."

He started to realize the 480 pounds on his 5-feet, 5-inch frame could end his life early and he was determined to fix it.

With no expert supervision, he turned to the Internet and took some tips there to design his own plan.

It would start with strictly decreasing calories down to 1,000 a day.

"It was very tough the first two months especially. I mean you are starving," he remembers.

But he also remembers how the pounds started melting away. The first 20 pounds came off in two weeks and that would be it. He says he became addicted to weight loss.

As he kept knocking down his calorie intake, he would also pick up exercise.

Eleven months later he was down 250 pounds, and not finished yet. The before and after pictures are jaw dropping.

But more importantly, the changes it's made in his life altogether are incredible.  As a smile takes over his face he puts it this way, "It's great to get into that mindset because you can do anything."

As big as an accomplishment as it is though, it's tough to find any weight loss expert who would recommend what Rodney did.  One local doctor says he was lucky... and the explanation sure makes sense.  The whole story and his transformation tonight on Cleveland 19 at 11 p.m.
