ASHLAND, OH (WOIO) - Bond has been set at $1 million for a man accused of killing two women in Ashland. Shawn Michael Grate, 40, was charged with two counts of murder and one count of kidnapping Thursday.
He did not enter a plea. The whole arraignment only took a few minutes and was done by video, with the defendant appearing from jail.
Grate had nothing to say aside from a couple quick answers to basic questions ensuring he understood the charges and would need a public defender.
Grate was arrested Tuesday in Ashland and charged with kidnapping.
It was that day a woman called police and said Grate abducted her. She was able to call 911 while he was sleeping.
While processing the Ashland scene, police discovered 2 bodies. They have been identified as missing women Elizabeth Griffin and Stacey Stanley.
Police said Grate led them to a third body in a wooded area in neighboring Richland County. So far no charges have been filed in that case.
Grate's next hearing in Ashland is set for Monday morning.
