CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) - Three people are in custody in connection to the shooting death of 9-year-old Saniyah Nicholson, according to Cuyahoga County Juvenile Court records.

Saniyah was shot and killed while sitting in her mother's car outside of a boxing gym near the intersection of Lee Road and Harvard Avenue.

Police say two groups of people began firing at each other in the area on Wednesday, striking Saniyah with crossfire.

On Friday afternoon, Cleveland Police and Mayor Frank Jackson's Office released the following statement:

"The preliminary investigation revealed that the shooting occurred between two groups of young males. Two males on foot exchanged gunfire with two males in a vehicle. Both of the occupants of the vehicle, a 19-year-old named Devontae Nettles and a 17-year-old male have been arrested. One of the males on foot, a 17-year-old male was arrested and police are working with prosecutors to obtain a warrant for the second male on foot who is 16 years old. At this time there is no known gang affiliation. This case remains in the early stages and police continue to investigate as to if anyone else was involved."
