Lakewood's Johnny Appleseed undergoing long-awaited restoration
Lakewood High School's Early Settler is in good condition, and is expected to be perched at above the Lakewood Civic Auditorium for years to come.

LAKEWOOD, OH (WOIO) - Johnny Appleseed, aka the Early Settler, is undergoing a long-awaited spruce up this summer at Lakewood High School, according to the Lakewood Rangers Education Foundation.

Johnny's makeover is the final project in the restoration of Viktor Schreckengost's Lakewood artworks.

The piece has been perched above the Lakewood Civic Auditorium for decades, and will likely remain for years to come.

Specialists from Vector Corrosion Services in partnership with Cleveland's Intermuseum Conservation Association (ICA) determined that Johnny's steel support components as well as terracotta pieces are in good structural condition.

The statue's long-faded colors are vibrant once again since his power wash last week, and he's just about photo ready.
