Soldier accused of strangling man

BRUNSWICK, Ohio - An Army soldier stationed in Hawaii has been arrested and charged with strangling a northeast Ohio man, police said.

Shaun Cleland, 24, was taken into custody at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport on Sunday as he prepared to board a plane to Hawaii.

Cleland, who used to live in nearby Seville, has been charged with strangling David Heinricht, 19, a friend of Cleland and his estranged wife, police said.

Cleland was being held in Medina County Jail on $2 million bond. He was arraigned Monday on a murder charge in municipal court.

Heinricht was found dead in his apartment early Sunday with a rope around his neck, said Brunswick police Sgt. Joseph McDermott. A message seeking comment about Cleland was left Monday night with U.S. Army Public Affairs.
