Ohio sends most visitors to Hilton Head Island

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. - The old joke around Hilton Head Island might just be true -- there may be more Ohio license plates than South Carolina plates.

Business officials have released a survey that found Ohio sends more vacationers to the island than any other state.

The old standby -- New York -- has fallen to fourth place, according to the Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce's 2006 Visitor Profile Survey.

The survey also found visitors stay longer, spend more money, are more likely to drive to the island and stay mainly in vacation rentals.

In 2005, 2.3 million people visited the island, up from 2.2 million tourists in 2004. The total economic impact was $1.57 billion, said chamber spokeswoman Charlie Clark.

The chamber last surveyed visitors in 1999.
