Radio service for the blind in bingo dispute with the state

AKRON, Ohio - An Akron reading service for the blind and seeing-impaired says a bingo battle has put its future in jeopardy.

State Attorney General Jim Petro has informed the Written Communications Radio Service that it can't raise money through bingo because it doesn't qualify as an educational organization.

The reading service has been running bingo games since 1990, but the state says a 2003 law narrowed the definition of groups allowed to hold them.

Written Communications now argues that it should be allowed to operate bingo as a charitable organization. The matter is now before an arbiter.

The group has been given a temporary permit to run traditional bingo, but not the instant bingo tickets that bring in most of its funds.
