School tax backers try to put brakes on tax reduction effort

CANTON, Ohio - Supporters of a school tax narrowly approved last month in suburban Canton are trying an unusual tactic.

Lake School District tax backers camped outside the county elections board in Canton for 40 hours over the weekend. They were determined to be the first to file a tax-related referendum petition.

The pro-tax referendum actually would be a minimal spending cut. That could prevent a bigger cut by tax opponents because state law only allows one referendum on any given tax in an election.

In addition, there can be just one repeal effort every five years.

Elsewhere in Ohio, three of five minimal tax cut ballot issues were approved last year.
