Akron dismisses firefighter living outside city

AKRON, Ohio - Akron's mayor is backing up a promise to enforce a city employee residency requirement by dismissing a firefighter.

The city says that firefighter Brenda Wagner has an apartment in Akron but lives with her husband and school-age children in suburban Brimfield Township. She joined the department last year and was given one year to move into Akron.

Wagner has requested a hearing to appeal the dismissal.

In January, Gov. Bob Taft signed a bill outlawing most municipal residency requirements. The law doesn't take effect until May 1 and wouldn't cover Wagner.
