MANSFIELD - A high-speed chase early today started on Ohio 13 near Piper Road and ended on Interstate 71 near the Ashland County line, reaching speeds over 100 miles per hour on U.S. 30 through town.

Thomas F. Grossbeck Jr., 25, of Mansfield, was charged with felony fleeing, reckless operation and speeding. He was expected to make his initial court appearance this morning.

Richland County sheriff deputies started and ended the pursuit, but Mansfield police officers and State Highway Patrol troopers were also involved.

Sgt. Michael Viars of the sheriff's department said the chase began at 4:05 a.m. when a deputy tried to stop Grossbeck for speeding near the airport. The 27-mile chase ended at 4:27. The pursuit went up and down several streets on Mansfield's north side. Grossbeck tore up a lawn near Wayne Street and did some damage to Coolridge Golf Course, Viars said.

Grossbeck had an open container in his car at the time of his arrest, Viars said.
