Midwife Pleads Innocent To Illegally Practicing Medicine

MILLERSBURG, Ohio (AP) - A midwife who works in northeast Ohio's Amish community pleaded innocent on Monday to charges that she illegally gave a patient a prescription drug.

Frieda Miller, 47, of Berlin, is charged with practicing medicine without a license and possessing and selling a dangerous drug. She could face more than three years in prison if convicted.

More than 200 people, including clients and fellow practitioners, packed Holmes County Common Pleas Court on Monday in support of Miller, who has been a midwife for 17 years.

Miller is accused of giving two drugs to a woman who suffered unusually heavy bleeding after delivering a baby at Miller's home in December. The woman was taken to a local hospital, where she was treated and released.

Prosecutors said that the case is about the illegal administration of drugs, not prosecuting midwives.
