Diplomat: Brazilian Suspect Likely Won't Be Extradited to Ohio
WARREN, Ohio (AP) - Authorities say a Brazilian-born woman accused of killing her husband in their northeast Ohio home and suspected of fleeing to her homeland will likely not be returned to the United States for trial.
Prosecutors believe 42-year-old Claudia Hoerig fatally shot her husband at their home in Newton Falls on March 12th and fled to Brazil that same night.
Karl Hoerig was a pilot with Southwest Airlines and an Air Force Reserve major who had served in the Persian Gulf.
The U.S. Marshal Service obtained a federal warrant charging Claudia Hoerig -- a naturalized U.S. citizen -- with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.
But an e-mail from the U.S. ambassador to Brazil to relatives of Karl Hoerig says Brazil has stated that since Claudia Hoerig is also a Brazilian national, she cannot be extradited to the U.S.
