Girl Shot At Campground Released From Hospital

CANTON, Ohio (AP) - An 11-year-old girl shot at a campground outside Cambridge earlier this month has been released from the hospital.

Rebecca Lewers lost a kidney because of a gunshot wound and internal bleeding, said Dr. Robert Klein, chairman of pediatric surgery at Akron Children's Hospital. He said she would not need further rehabilitation.

"She's very strong," her father, Don Lewers, said Tuesday. "She took it better than I ever thought she would."

Mike Morris, 19, of Canton, has been charged with two counts of attempted murder in the shootings of Lewers and Crystal McCalla at the Buckett Hill Campground. He is in jail on a $1 million bond.

McCalla, 11, suffered less serious wounds, hospital spokeswoman Laurie Schueler said.

Morris arrived at the campground June 4 and had a fight with his mother, then wounded the girls when he began shooting at his mother and sister, authorities said. The girls were friends of Morris' younger sister.
