AKRON, OH (WOIO) -

Chief Investigative Reporter Carl Monday checked the background of the pilot involved in Tuesday’s deadly plane crash in Akron.

Andres Chavez was an experienced pilot with more than a decade of air miles under his belt.

According to the FAA, 39-year-old Chavez had all the proper credentials. He was certified to land single-engine commercial planes, as well as transport planes, like the one that crashed.

In a press conference, Vice-Chairman of the NTSB, Bella Dinh-Zarr, said Chavez held an Air Transport Pilot certificate, the highest level given by the FAA. Additionally, he had a first class medical certificate from the FAA. Dinh-Zarr also noted he had more than 6,000 hours of flying experience.

Chavez had been flying for about 15 years and was based out of Florida.

The divorced father leaves behind a 4-year-old son.

We’re still waiting on the identity of the second pilot in that downed Akron plane. When they release his name, we’ll have it for you.

The FAA has confirmed that ExecuFlight, the company Chavez flew for, was properly certified.
