Akron man arrested for the murder of his mother

AKRON, OH (WOIO) - The Akron Police have taken 47-year-old Derrick Williams into custody on an arrest warrant for the murder of his mother. The 78-year-old Akron woman was found dead in her home Thursday.

Williams was taken into custody Friday night, he was back at the house where he allegedly killed his mother and was arrested without incident.

He has been charged with murder, he is accused of beating her to death. He has done time in the past for hurting his mother.

He will be back in court on Monday. His bad was set at $1 million. He remains in the Summit County jail.

When Alaine Williams' daughter couldn't get in contact with her Thursday night, she went to the Hartford Avenue house around 9 p.m. to find her mother unresponsive on the kitchen floor with blunt force trauma to the head. She called 911 and told dispatchers her mother was founded beaten beyond recognition and that her brother did it.

"There are no signs of forced entry into the house," said Akron Police Lt. Rick Edwards. "We know that (the son) lived with his mother prior."

Derrick Williams has a criminal past. He was found guilty of assault in 2005, and guilty of cocaine possession and theft in 2012.

Fannie Purdue, who is the Neighborhood Watch president, lives across the street from the victim. Purdue said she was a nice neighbor who used to wander away from her home on occasion and that she would bring her back. She is saddened by her murder.

"When the daughter came over, she found her mother dead," Purdue said. "I'm just telling you, folks are going crazy -- they've been having problems with that house for a long time."
