RICHMOND, HEIGHTS, OH (WOIO) - “Heh, there you go,” a Richmond Heights officer yells out as a trapped deer leaps free.

Richmond Heights officers Sgt. Richard Olexa and Ptl. Kevin Watts were called to the Richmond Heights home owner Friday, January 4 after it was discovered a deer had fallen into the pool and was trapped by the cover. A hole in the cover indicated the deer had fallen through after attempting to walk on the pool.

RHPD Officers Rescue Deer From Swimming Pool

Sgt. Olexa and Ptl. Watts were dispatched to a house over the weekend for a report of a deer that had fallen through a pool cover and was trapped underneath. The officers were quickly able to remove the cover which allowed the deer to leap out of the pool. After a few moments of confusion, and the deer finding out the hard way that it is not possible to jump through a chain-link fence, the deer was finally able to find its way safely out of the yard! Nice job guys!

In the Facebook video the officers pulled back the cover to free the deer.

You can hear one of the officers say, “Heh, there you go,” before seeing the frightened animal go the wrong way and get trapped in the front yard. The deer quickly turned around and appeared to escape through the back yard, but not before a failed attempt to leap the side fence.

You can hear the officer gasp as the deer hits the fence too hard. The deer appeared to recover quickly and escaped from the back yard.

Officer Greg Patterson posted the video on the department’s new Facebook page.

“You never know what you’re going to get," Patterson said. “Luckily they were able to help.”

The Richmond Heights Police Department posted the video Monday morning just after 11:00 a.m.
