Parking garage on Huron Road being torn down to prepare for what’s next

CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) - The parking garage on Huron Road was deemed a public safety hazard and a liability.

This garage was a popular spot for people to park for games and concerts. Now, it is being torn down.

“I think it is great that the city or whoever finally took initiative and understood the safety of Clevelanders that the $40 to park is sometimes not worth the lives,” said Sean Martin.

19 News first brought you this story in October of 2022. We investigated the safety issues after Sean Martin posted his concerns on Social Media.

“I just thought that the owners of the building at the time were being unfair to Clevelanders and people coming in,” said Martin.

Shortly after our story aired, the parking garage closed down.

The Director of the City’s Building and Housing Department told 19 News that the City does not regularly inspect parking garages. They say it is up to the owner of that garage to maintain the safety of the structure.

According to the city, the garage closed to customers after initial violation notices were issued.

The property was bought in January by Prospect Avenue Acquisitions.

The city says this transfer in ownership resets the violations notices.

Prospect Avenue Acquisitions proposed demolition plans for the space to the City.

“The structure itself and all supported levels will be removed down to the basement level which is about 11 feet below the street level. All interior walls will also be removed,” said one of the engineers for the project.

As of right now, they say they plan on making the space a parking lot with 36 spaces.

“The perimeter of the lot will have four lighting poles and there will be one entrance and exit.”

When Prospect Avenue Acquisitions bought the space, they agreed to a conditional use with the City. This means the 36 space parking lot will only be for a year. After that year, they need to show proof to the City that they are working on developing the property.

This means that space has potential to be turned into something completely different in the future.
