Prescribed oxygen? You could be at greater risk for fire, but this equipment helps you stay safe

CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) - When a home oxygen therapy system is put near a flame, what you get is a major fire that could lead to tragedy.

However, the Ohio Department of Commerce and State Fire Marshal say a simple piece of equipment, called thermal fuses, could save a life.

“Just like a sprinkler system is able to automatically detect and extinguish a fire, these thermal fuses serve as a last line of defense for individuals who use oxygen” said State Fire Marshal Fire Prevention Bureau Chief Anita Metheny.

The device does not stop a fire but prevents it from spreading.

According to the State Fire Marshal, smoking-related fires are the top cause of fire fatalities in the state.

The flames on oxygen tubing can quickly travel down and ignite everything in its path.

“We never want people to smoke while on oxygen because it is extremely dangerous.” said Metheny. “Simply put, the best and safest option for individuals who use home oxygen is to avoid open flames altogether.”

How can you get your hands on this life saving item? There are several ways .

• If you are prescribed oxygen, ask the company if they provide the device.
• Visit any medical supply company to purchase, often for less than $10 per fuse.
• Contact your local fire department to see if they have thermal fuses available free of charge.

“They very well could mean the difference between life and death,” said Methany.
