Akron murder suspect arrested after standoff with SWAT

SUMMIT COUNTY, Ohio (WOIO) - The suspect accused of fatally shooting a man inside an Akron home, punching a woman inside a separate residence and barricading himself inside a third home was arrested after a standoff with SWAT officers.

Akron police said Byron Johnson, 28, shot a 32-year-old man inside a home in the 100 block of E. Wilbeth Rd. around 12:05 a.m.

Police said Johnson had been at the home with the victim, identified as Darnell E. McGrady, and at least one other male.

Johnson then allegedly fled the scene in the victim’s car and drove to a home in the 1000 block of Silvercrest Ave.

After forcing his way inside, Johnson is accused of punching a 65-year-old woman several times and stealing money. Police said Johnson did know the woman.

According to police, Johnson was then tracked by OnStar to a home in the 500 block of Storer Ave., where he barricaded himself inside.

A 47-year-old resident, a 20-year-old man and a one-year-old child were escorted to safety by police, but Johnson allegedly remained inside.

SWAT officers were called to the scene and took Johnson into custody without incident.

Police added Johnson did try to climb out of a window before being arrested.

He is charged with murder, aggravated burglary, felonious assault, and motor vehicle theft.
