Akron beats Miami in a 76-74 thriller to win MAC Championship
Akron has won back-to-back MAC Championships.
CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) - No. 1 Akron fought back from an 18-point deficit to beat No. 2 Miami (OH) 76-4 and punch their ticket to the NCAA Tournament.
It was a match up of the top two teams in the MAC, but for head coaches Travis Steele and John Groce, it was a family affair, Steele and Groce are half brothers.
The RedHawks came out firing from the three, starting the game 7-10 from deep. Peter Suder led the way for Miami in the first half shooting 4-5 from the three, for 16 first half points.
For Akron, it was the opposite. The Zips went 0-4 from the three to start the first half, and quickly found themselves in an 18 point hole.
However in the second half, Akron went on a 11-3 run and never backed down.
Nate Johnson led the way for the Zips with 22 points and won Akron the game in the final seconds.
Akron will now turn their attention towards the NCAA Tournament, marking their second-straight appearance.
