CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) - A women’s pro soccer team will now call Cleveland home.

The announcement was made Wednesday morning, and had fans excited for the team within hours.

“It’s awesome, I mean I got 3 daughters at home so maybe one day they’ll play for ‘em,” Marc Braun said.

Ohio’s first ever women’s pro soccer team is part of WPSL Pro, a brand new Division II league.

University of Akron grad, Samara Yurchak, played for her school’s women’s soccer team- and says she’s pumped for the season to start.

“I think it’s great for women’s sports to be in the city,” Yurchak said. “I don’t recall that there are any teams, so that’s awesome for soccer to be the first.”

The league will launch in the spring of 2027.

“What we have seen over the past 2 years of announcing and sharing plans for professional soccer, is that every time this thing gets more real,” Chief Marketing Officer for the Cleveland Pro Soccer group Gina Prodan-Kelly said.

“We see people get more excited and more engaged.”

Their stadium will be located in downtown Cleveland, across from Progressive Field and underneath the Innerbelt Bridge.

According to their website, the new stadium will seat 10,000.

Season ticket deposits opened Wednesday.

“This is really the beginning of this journey for Cleveland and soccer, and we really want fans all around Northeast Ohio to be part of this process– of creating the teams," Prodan-Kelly said.

Prodan-Kelly says she hopes that ground-breaking on the stadium can begin in June of 2025, but that the stadium should be finished in time for the 2027 WPSL Pro League’s Division II league.

Voting on the team’s information begins April 17th.
