LORAIN COUNTY, Ohio (WOIO) - The man who allegedly went to the Elyria Police Station with the “explicit intent of killing an officer,” but when he did not find one in the lobby, he attacked a woman instead, has entered a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity.

Daniel Carrillo remains locked up in the Lorain County Jail and his attorney filed a motion to determine whether Carrillo is competent to stand trial.

In April, Carrillo was indicted on the charges of attempted murder, felonious assault, assault, aggravated menacing, and strangulation.

The attack happened around 2:30 p.m. on March 10 in the lobby of the station at 18 West Ave.

The security video given by police shows Carrillo walk into the station and up to a glass window.

“I’d like to turn myself in for publicly, publicly intoxication,” said Carrillo.

A person behind the window asks Carrillo for his name and phone number, then asks if he’s drunk.

“Nah, I’m high,” said Carrillo.

Shortly after, Carrillo goes and sits in a chair.

That’s when a woman approaches the window.

Police said the woman was standing in line to get a copy of a report, when Carrillo approached with a belt in his hands and wrapped it around her neck.

She told police after seeing the look in his eyes, she believed he was going to kill her.

It was about 17 seconds later that officers rescued the woman from Carrillo and immediately placed him in handcuffs.

“I want to commend the responding officers for their rapid response and decisive actions in preventing further violence,” said Elyria Police Captain Bill Lantz.

The woman, who has a prior heart condition, suffered a laceration on her nose and hand and redness around her throat and knuckles.

She was treated by Life Care at the station but declined further medical treatment.
