‘He was a great guy’: Cleveland man killed in murder-suicide while mowing his lawn, neighbors say

CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) - Cleveland police are conducting a suspected murder-suicide investigation Wednesday on the city’s west side.

Officers were first called out around 1:30 p.m. to the 15700 block of Munn Road in the West Park neighborhood.

There, officers found a man fatally shot in the street. A neighbor told 19 News the victim was mowing the lawn when he was killed.

The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner later identified him as 68-year-old Thomas Overall.

“He was a great neighbor, he was a great guy,” a neighbor said of the murder victim with tears in his eyes.

Cleveland police say officers immediately began searching for the suspect and located his car just minutes away near Stinchcomb Memorial.

Inside the vehicle, police say they found the suspect dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner identified him as Bryan Hurt.

Ward 17 Councilman Charles Slife posted on social media about the incident.

This afternoon, a resident was shot and killed at Munn Road and Doris Road.

The suspect, a neighbor, took his life in the Metroparks.

Cleveland Police, the County Prosecutor’s Office, and the Coroner are at the scene investigating.

I visited and spoke with neighbors, who are understandably shocked and distraught. A neighbor asked for a priest to be contacted in light of the victim’s faith; Father Ramser from OLA came and offered a prayer for him.

At this time, these are the facts as I know them.

Please pray for the victim and for his neighbors who are processing this senseless act of violence.

According to the Cleveland Hiking Club, the victim planned to leave for a hiking trip to Spain on Friday.

Another neighbor told 19 News the victim and suspect lived near each other, and the suspect was known to cause issues.

“He had continuous problems, everybody did in the neighborhood, with this neighbor,” she said.

At least one school located in the area made changes to pickup due to the shooting.
