WASHINGTON (Gray DC) - Congressman Al Green (D-TX) announced Thursday he will file articles of impeachment against Donald Trump before Christmas.

”There will be articles of impeachment filed before the Christmas break, this I will pledge to you," Green said surrounded by supporters on Capitol Hill.

Green said he plans to introduce the impeachment articles as a privileged motion, which speeds up the process for a floor vote.

A successful impeachment is highly unlikely in a Republican congress, but Green emphasized he does not want to wait for a viable majority to file articles of impeachment.

“I’d love to have a majority, but the Constitution does not have a scintilla of a word in it, indicating that you have to wait until you have a majority to impeach,” Green said when asked about the Democratic minority.

Green said he had not asked House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries or others in Democratic leadership about his decision.

Jeffries said he “hadn’t had a conversation with Al Green yet” when asked for his reaction to the announcement.

The House impeached Trump twice during his first term but the Senate did not remove him from office.
