Cleveland Browns News and Rumors 12/1: The Pain of Instructive Mistakes

CLEVELAND, Ohio (TheOBR.com) - Good morning, Cleveland Browns fans! Another Browns loss takes the team to 3-9, but it’s not all doom-and-gloom out there as a young Browns team shows progress in some areas and steps back in others.
THE DAILY BLOVIATION
There were a lot of stories that sprang up before, during, and after the Browns’ 26-8 loss to the San Francisco 49ers... too many for me to pick just one to bloviate on this morning. So, here are a bunch of idle thoughts as they randomly barge into my brain early in the morning.
-- I’m not going to blame everything that happened Sunday on Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski, even though he bears ultimate accountability. The Browns were competitive with the 49ers, and it would have been a close game except that the Browns were continually giving San Francisco short fields. As good as the Browns’ defense is, it’s not a great idea to hand the ball to experienced players like Brock Purdy and Christian McCaffrey in your own territory.
The three most grievous miscues to create short fields were made by Gage Larvadain, Harold Fannin, and Malachi Corley - all young and inexperienced players. Arguably, the Browns’ punt team is filled with young talent as well, as they allowed the long return, which set up the 49ers’ first score. While the Browns have a great class of youngsters, fresh-faced players are notoriously inconsistent and prone to errors. In the NFL, a game played at the highest level, any mistakes are big ones, and the Browns made too many to stay in the game.
-- The fourth-down direct snap to Fannin was most frequently blamed on Stefanski, who didn’t throw his playcaller, Tommy Rees, under the bus for the call. Harold Fannin has a bright and promising career in front of him, but he mishandled the snap. His task was to take the ball and move forward a short distance for a first down, and he botched it. Young player and things happen. I have no issue with how Stefanski discussed the play later, although many fans are pointing the finger at him for the failed attempt or complaining about his nonchalant explanation.
-- Shedeur Sanders was fine. Not great, not horrible. He earned another start, at least. Generally, middling offensive play is enough to keep the Browns in a game, but Sunday’s game was marred by special teams errors, which tilted the field to the Niners’ side. The Niners are simply a better team than the Browns at this juncture, experienced and battle-tested. The defense was terrific per usual, but short fields and a series of mistakes were enough for Kyle Shanahan’s charges to get the ball in the end zone.
-- This has been an excellent week for the arrival of the term “hoe” in football, and Shelby Harris applied the term with vigor to 49ers WR Jauan Jennings after the game. “I see why he got punched in the nuts‚" Harris said, “He says some things that you should not say to another man ever. But I don’t respect it because you say that, then run behind your O-line. That’s some real soft s---, and I want that known.”
Color me unimpressed. I’m sure it’s tough to overlook an opponent running at the mouth. Apparently, Jennings is particularly awful, but it’s not a good look to be so affected by the yammering that accompanies football that it creates penalties or distractions. Ignore the idiot and move on.
-- Nor am I concerned about the intense discussion between Shedeur Sanders and veteran wide receiver Jerry Jeudy on the sideline, which various opportunists will turn into a big deal or use to paint Jeudy once again as a malcontent. Jeudy is coming off a great year and having a bad one, and is understandably frustrated at not making the most of the opportunities he gets while the Browns use multiple quarterbacks during the season. Get Jeudy the ball when he’s open, and these disagreements will be as minor as they were last year. Jeudy badly needs help in the wide receiver room, as he understandably gets the majority of DB attention when the Browns throw the ball.
-- The Tennessee Titans should provide some relief to the ongoing angst about the Browns next weekend. It’s another week for Sanders and the other rookies to take a step forward. My eyes are firmly focused on 2026 and 2027, and for whatever reason, I have a strange optimism about what the future holds.
