VIDEO: Stark County man takes gun from officer, fires off shot as officers attempted to arrest him
NEW PHILADELPHIA, Ohio (WOIO) - A Stark County man wanted on felony warrants fired an officer’s weapon during an arrest attempt Wednesday morning in New Philadelphia.
Police were called to make a welfare check in the 1800 block of East High Avenue. Callers reported a man lying against a tree in a wooded area.
Officers located the man, who initially gave them false ID information. After 30 to 35 minutes, officers identified the man as a 25-year-old man from Stark County, who was wanted on two active felony warrants with a violent offender designation.
When officers tried to arrest him, he took off on foot into a wooded area. Officers pursued and tackled him. While on the ground, the suspect gained control of an officer’s gun, removed it from its holster, and fired one round. The suspect reportedly stated, “I am going to keep shooting.”
Officers quickly regained control of the gun and took him into custody.
The investigation is ongoing.
