Firefighter rescued after being trapped in 2-alarm Cleveland fire
CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) - The Cleveland Division of Fire sounded a second alarm for a structure fire Sunday afternoon.
According to Cleveland Fire, the fire was reported in the 6000 block of Carnegie Avenue at a storage facility.
Smoke was visible upon arrival and crews began suppression operations.
During interior firefighting operations, a mayday was declared after a crew experienced disorientation due to the building’s complex layout.
Cleveland Fire said the crew was quickly located by the other half of their company and operating nearby.
As conditions changed, a tactical withdrawal was ordered an all companies were accounted for.
Between the withdrawal and reentry, Cleveland Fire said crews breached a brick masonry wall to access and reduce fire conditions, allowing for safer interior operations.
A second alarm was requested to assist with ongoing operations, and crews were working to locate and extinguish the fire.
Crews reentered under zero visibility conditions, forcing entry into multiple storage units to locate and extinguish fire throughout the affected area.
While operations were going, Cleveland Fire said it responded to 81 additional 911 calls, including an apartment fire in the same district where a victim was removed.
Through coordination with the Fire Dispatch Center, resources were managed to ensure no delays in emergency response across the city.
Cleveland Fire said it thanks its partners with the Cleveland Police, Cleveland EMS and American Red Cross for their assistance.
The Red Cross provided canteen services with food and water for crews on both incident, and assisted the family displaced by the apartment fire.
The incident was brought under control Sunday evening around 8:22 p.m., and the incident highlights the coordination, adaptability and accountability required on every fireground, Cleveland Fire said.
