E-bike rider seriously injured in crash; Mentor-on-the-Lake police urge helmet use

MENTOR-ON-THE-LAKE, Ohio (WOIO) - Officers from the Mentor-on-the-Lake Police Department responded to an e-bike crash earlier this month.

According to a social media post, the crash involved a 36-year-old man ho was riding his bike and lost control on July 18.

The man feel on the concrete sidewalk, and because he was not wearing a helmet, he had a significant head injury.

When both officers arrived, they immediately assessed the situation and took decisive action, police shared.

Officer Gainer retrieved his personal medical kit and began rendering emergency care to the injured rider, quickly controlling the significant bleeding from the victim’s head.

With assistance from two Samaritans, the man was stabilized to prevent further injury until EMS arrived.

Officer Gainer also assisted EMS in safely lifting the patient onto the cot for transport to the hospital.

Police said this incident serves as an important reminder to wear helmets, not just children, but adults too.

All riders under the age of 18 must wear a helmet, but police said if operating a class 3 e-bike, everyone must wear a helmet regardless of age.

A helmet is one of the simplest pieces of safety equipment a rider can wear, and it could make the difference between walking away from a crash and a life-altering injury.

MOTL Police shared on social media that it wanted to recognize Officer William Gainer and Detective Clay Braidic for their outstanding response during the July 18 incident.

Their calm professionalism, quick thinking, medical training and commitment to serving others exemplify the dedication our officers bring to every call for service.

As the summer months continue, police asks that everyone including children, teens and adults alike to make safety a priority and remember the following:

• Ride responsibly
• Follow all traffic laws
• Be aware of your surroundings
