Rare two-headed turtle hatchling found on Cape Cod

CAPE COD, Mass. (CNN) — A rare two-headed diamondback terrapin hatchling was brought to marine wildlife officials in New England for assessment, according to the Cape Wildlife Center.

The turtle was discovered at a nesting site on Cape Cod.

The hatchling weighs roughly as much as a nickel, the center said.

The center said the turtle has a rare developmental anomaly called bicephaly, in which two independent and functional heads grow from a single body.

The center said it is closely monitoring the appetite, growth and behavior of the hatchling.

The center said it has seen only two other bicephalic cases in the last five years.
