Akron's Canyon Brook Drive partially collapses during Thursday's storms
AKRON, Ohio (WOIO) - If tornadoes weren’t enough, the wild weather continued in Northeast Ohio Thursday night when remnants of Hurricane Debby caused flash flooding in Summit County.
Canyon Brook Drive in Akron near the Timber Top Apartments partially collapsed that night.
“It was pretty scary at first to be honest because all the water rushing in through the apartments as well from the creek and the road collapsing is kind of scary,” said Jenna Reutter, who lives in the apartments.
Reutter was home when the storms rolled in.
“I was in my apartment, and I first heard a loud boom from the rocks falling and then the lightning, the water actually went up to my door and I couldn’t come out of the house,” she recalled.
Akron police said at around 10:15 Thursday night Canyon Brook Drive crumbled under the pressure of the heavy rain and flooding. The good news is no one was hurt.
“I was kind of confused and shocked for a minute,” said another apartment resident, Jeremiah Clute. “The road was like completely gone like half of it just fell in the water which is insane.”
Bobby Spino and Eli Connors also live in the apartments. They were caught completely off guard when they discovered their basement was underwater.
“I was sitting in the living room watching the Olympics and my cat came sprinting upstairs and was soaking wet, shook water all over me so I sprinted downstairs and seen it was three feet of water in the basement,” Connors said.
“We didn’t have renter’s insurance, and our dryer got ruined and our furnace and all this stuff, so renter’s insurance is a good thing to look into,” Spino said. “I learned that last night.”
Amongst all the stress of their flooded apartment, Spino and Connors didn’t even realize the road was gone.
“Oh my gosh!” exclaimed Connors.
“No way!” added Spino. “Which road is it, over there?”
“I’m speechless, that’s wild,” Connors said. “I’ve never seen something like that happen from a storm, take out a whole road, that’s crazy.”
The road is closed but there are other ways in and out of this apartment complex. The city has not begun any repairs yet, they’re still assessing the damage.
