CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) - Three people are in custody after a police chase ended with a spin-out and fistfight in front of a high school.

Newburgh Heights Police Chief John Majoy says a police officer started to follow a van after the license plate was run and popped as a stolen car.

Just off Harvard Avenue, the officer attempted to make a traffic stop, but the driver backed into the squad car before taking off.

“We tried to deploy stop sticks in front of the police station but were unsuccessful,” said Majoy. “The vehicle went down Dennison, a couple of side streets from Clark to 65th, made a wide turn here, and spun out and hit the curb here.”

That spinout happened right in front of Max Hayes high school.

“Our dispatch put the school on lockdown because of the situation, the driver of the vehicle exited and took off running, got into a fist fight with one of our officers, the suspect was ultimately tased and taken into custody,” said Majoy.

Cleveland Metropolitan School District officials confirm a code blue issued earlier Wednesday has since been lifted.

Chief Majoy says the lockdown lasted roughly an hour.

The driver was taken into custody and then to a nearby hospital.

Two women who were also in the van but did not flee after the crash were taken into custody.

Police say multiple drugs, including PCP, were found in the van, and the driver is facing several charges, including OVI.

Newburg Heights Police body camera footage shows the moments the three were taken into custody.
