Akron school’s fieldhouse badly damaged in fire

AKRON, Ohio (WOIO) - Fire broke out at the Fieldhouse of Ellet Community Learning Center Tuesday afternoon.

The fire started in a weight room outside the Fieldhouse and quickly spread, causing significant damage to the structure. The building housed locker rooms and equipment storage.

The Fieldhouse is a separate structure from the main school building.

The Akron Fire Department responded to the scene just after 1 p.m.

“We are grateful for the rapid response and professionalism of the Akron Fire Department,” stated Dr. Stacey Hodoh, director of communications of Akron Schools. “The department’s quick action prevented the fire from further spreading, but, unfortunately, the detached Fieldhouse did sustain significant damage.”

The cause of the fire is not known at this time.

No injuries were reported.

The main school building was not affected, and evacuation was not necessary.
