Man sentenced to prison after pleading guilty to armed robbery while on parole

CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) - A 45-year-old man with a criminal past has been sentenced to prison for robbing a Family Dollar and threatening employees with a gun.

Gary Crump, of Cleveland, was sentenced to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty in May to Interference with Commerce by Robbery and weapons charges.

He was also ordered to serve five years of supervised release when he is released from prison.

Crump was on parole for past aggravated robbery charges.

According to court documents and evidence on December 11 at around 7:25 p.m., police responded to an armed robbery at a Family Dollar store on W. 130th Street in Cleveland.

The suspect, who was later identified as Crump, put a black handgun to the clerk’s stomach and demanded that she open the cash register.

Crump ripped the cash register till from the machine and then fled on foot with stolen cash.

Officers observed fresh footprints in the snow headed southbound on W. 130th from the scene. A GPS tracker hidden in the stack of money the defendant took indicated that it was located at a residence on Wilton Road in Cleveland, about half a mile from the scene of the robbery. During a search warrant executed at the residence, investigators found Crump and recovered $400 in cash. Investigators also seized a loaded Hi-Point CF 380 semi-automatic pistol, which was later determined to be stolen.

During the investigation, agents also learned that Crump was on parole for a previous aggravated robbery.

This case was investigated by the FBI Cleveland Division and the Cleveland Division of Police.

The prosecution was led by Assistant United States Attorney Scott Zarzycki for the Northern District of Ohio.
