Who was Aliza Sherman? Victim stabbed to death in downtown Cleveland; Divorce attorney charged
CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) - Aliza Sherman was stabbed to death outside of her divorce attorney’s office in 2013.
Now, 12 years later, an arrest was made in her case.
19 News is looking into who Sherman was and what led to her tragic murder.
The Nurse
Before her death, Eliza Sherman was a beloved fertility nurse at the Cleveland Clinic.
Sherman started at a Beachwood branch of the Cleveland Clinic in 2003, where she worked in the IVF surgical department.
Sherman moved to the main branch of the Cleveland Clinic in September 2006.
Sherman got her degree in nursing from Cleveland State University.
In 2023, Sherman’s daughter Jennifer Sherman started the Aliza Sherman Fund through the Cleveland Clinic.
The fund goes to Cleveland Clinic patients and caregivers who have experienced violence.
“The money will also be allocated to introduce programs aimed at prevention and raising awareness,” the website said.
The Mother
Aliza Sherman was 53 when she died and she had four children.
Her children were between the ages of 17 and 29 at the time of their mother’s death.
“My mom was just an incredible person. Truly the best human I ever knew. She deserves for us to be here today,” said Sherman’s daughter, Jennifer, in an interview with 19 News on March 20, 2014.
Her children’s names are Joshua, Jennifer, Jason, and Jeremy.
The Wife
Aliza Sherman was in the middle of a messy divorce at the time of her murder in 2013.
Sanford Sherman, Aliza’s husband, died last year in Florida.
Aliza and Sanford were estranged at the time of her death.
According to court records, the divorce filing dates back to 2011.
Sanford Sherman was never named a suspect or charged in connection with Aliza’s death, but police always wanted to talk to him. Investigators say he wouldn’t cooperate.
Cuyahoga County Prosecutors confirmed to 19 News on Friday Sanford is not suspected of being a co-conspirator in Aliza’s murder.
Sherman passed away just a few days before the 4th of July holiday in 2024.
19 Investigates has reported Cleveland Police never interviewed Sanford Sherman.
19 News reached out to Sanford Sherman for a comment several times while he was living, but we never heard back.
Aliza was two days away from her divorce trial on the day of her death.
The victim
According to an indictment filed on May 2, 2025, Gregory Moore or an “unidentified” co-conspirator stabbed Sherman 11 times on March 24, 2013.
Sherman was outside of her divorce attorney, Gregory Moore’s, office on the double digit block of Erieview Plaza.
Sherman called 911 and was taken to the hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

The indictment said the scheme to kidnap her began in January 3, 2013.
Moore was secretly indicted 12 years later for the murder of Aliza Sherman.
The best friend
On Friday afternoon, 19 News sat down exclusively with Jan Lash.
“All we wanted was justice for her and we’re going to get it. And I’m just so grateful for all the work that everybody put into it,” said Lash. “It’s just waiting for something, waiting for peace for her, waiting for her to rest in peace and and I wish she was here but I had a feeling he had something to do with it all along and um, its hard to wrap my head around.”
Jan and Aliza met in a Lamaze class as they both were expecting children 40 years ago.
“It’s been so hard to live without her in my life and not knowing the truth,” said Lash.
Lash said she always believed suspect Gregory Moore had something to do with Aliza’s murder.
“Well, I always thought he had something to do with it when he it just didn’t make sense that he didn’t have anything to do with it since he had contacted her few times that day and everything was a little strange,” Lash said. “And my heart believed he had something to do with it.”
19 News Anchor Tiffani Tucker broke the news to Lash Friday afternoon just minutes before someone from the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation called her.
“They told me every time I call, they told me we’re working on it. And they got the job done,” Lash said. “And I’m so grateful.”
Jan is looking forward to finally getting the closure she needs.
“I want to stare at him and just let him know that what he did was horrific. He’s a monster,” Lash said.
