Cleveland holds 40th annual Police Memorial Parade

CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) - The 40th annual Police Memorial Parade was held downtown Friday morning.

The parade, held during National Police Week, is to honor the officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

Two Northeast Ohio police officers were killed in 2024.

Euclid Police Officer Jacob Derbin was killed on May 11, 2024 after Deshawn Vaughn ambushed him during a domestic dispute call on East 211th Street.

Vaughn died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound the next day.

Cleveland Police Officer Jamieson Ritter was fatally shot on July 4, 2024.

Officer Ritter had responded to East 80th Street and Wade Park Avenue for a Garfield Heights shooting suspect inside a home.

The suspect, Delawnte Hardy, exited the home and is accused of firing four shots.

Local, county, state, and federal law enforcement officers participated in the parade that started at 10:30 a.m. at East 12th Street and Lakeside Avenue.

Immediately following the parade, a memorial service was held held at the Greater Cleveland Peace Officers Memorial in Huntington Park at West 3rd Street and Lakeside Avenue.

A parking ban is in effect until 4 p.m. Friday on the following streets:

  • East 12th Street from Lakeside Avenue to Superior Avenue (east and west)
  • Ontario Street from Superior Avenue to Lakeside Avenue (east and west)
  • Lakeside Avenue from East 13th Street to West 3rd Street (north and south)
  • West 3rd Street between Lakeside Avenue and Summit Avenue (east and west)

All vehicles are prohibited from parking in the above areas during these hours.
