Ashland County Sheriff’s Office warns of potential jury duty scam

A caller claiming to be from the Ashland County Sheriff’s Office is telling potential victims that they had failed to show up for jury duty and were in contempt of court.

ASHLAND COUNTY, Ohio (WOIO) - The Ashland County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public about a reoccurring scam that appears to be coming from the Sheriff’s office.

A caller claiming to be Deputy Martin Henderson from the Ashland County Sheriff’s Office - Badge #198532 is telling potential victims that they had failed to show up for jury duty and were in contempt of court.

The caller then instructs their victims on where to bring some form of payment in order to avoid arrest.

The Ashland County Sheriff’s Office says there is no one at the station with that name or badge number.

The Sheriff’s Office warns that these scammers are using real or fake deputies’ names and office locations to make the scam seem more convincing. These scams are completely fake.

The Sheriff’s Office is advising people to call your local police department if someone calls to demand money from you in the name of law enforcement.

Local law enforcement will never threaten arrest over the phone, or ask someone to bring cash to a facility.

The Sheriff’s Office also says that caller IDs can be fraudulent, and that even if it reads Sheriff’s Office, that may not be where the caller is from.

People are advised to verify calls by calling the Ashland County Sheriff’s Office or local law enforcement.
