EAST CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) - Former East Cleveland Acting Mayor Sandra Morgan won by a landslide in Tuesday’s primary election.

She will face off in November against the current mayor, Lateek Shabazz, who finished second in Tuesday’s election.

The contenders on the primary ballot were:

  • Sean Ward
  • Juanita Gowdy
  • Vidah Aminah Saeed
  • Former interim mayor Sandra Morgan
  • Current mayor Lateek Shabazz

This past July, former East Cleveland Mayor Brandon King was sentenced to three years probation and 100 hours of community service.

King must also pay $27,000 in restitution and is banned from serving in an elected position.

On May 29, a jury found King guilty of the following charges:

  • One count of theft in office
  • Four counts of unlawful interest in a public contract
  • Three counts of misrepresentation by a public employee
  • One count of filing a false disclosure
  • One count of soliciting improper compensation

Morgan was appointed by a judge as interim mayor after King’s conviction.

Shabazz then claimed the role as his, saying as council president he was next in line.

In July, a Cuyahoga County Court of Appeals ruled in Shabazz’s favor.
